What Is Data Governance in Finance?
Data governance in finance means every field that drives money, such as a customer's tax ID, payment term, price list or discount, has a named owner and a written rule. Owners decide what correct looks like, stewards keep the data that way, and finance can measure how well it holds. Without it, revenue leaks quietly through duplicate customers, wrong prices and missed charges.

Why Finance Data Needs Governance
Finance sits at the end of every data chain. A sales rep creates a customer, someone in operations sets a payment term, pricing loads a new list, and finance inherits the result on the invoice and in the ledger. When nobody owns those fields, errors are found late, at month end or in an audit, and fixed in a spreadsheet instead of at the source.
37%
of CFOs do not fully trust the accuracy of their financial data.
Data governance is the decision layer. It answers who decides, which rule applies and what happens when a record breaks the rule. Data management, cleansing and tooling are the work that follows. Governance is what makes that work stick, so the same duplicate customer does not come back next quarter.
The cost is not abstract. A customer split across two codes can be billed from the wrong price list, a payment term typed by hand can quietly cost cash, and a discount nobody approved can eat margin. These are the patterns described in our revenue leakage guide.
Data Owner vs Data Steward: Who Does What?
The simplest way to separate the two roles: the data owner decides, the data steward does. In RACI terms the owner is accountable for a data domain and the steward is responsible for its daily quality.
| Topic | Data Owner | Data Steward |
|---|---|---|
| Who it usually is | A business leader, such as the Head of Credit or the Pricing Manager | A specialist close to the data, such as a master data or billing analyst |
| Main question | What is correct for this field, and who may change it? | Is the field correct today, and if not, how is it fixed? |
| Typical decisions | Approves the rule, the allowed values and exceptions | Applies the rule, corrects records, escalates conflicts |
Not every company needs two people per domain. In a mid-sized finance team one person can own and steward a field, as long as the rule is written down and someone is named. What fails is shared ownership, where everyone can edit a field and nobody is accountable for it. See the data owner and data steward entries in the glossary.
Which Finance Fields Need an Owner and a Rule?
The short answer is the fields that change money on an invoice: who the customer is, what price and discount they get and when they pay. The hard part is everything after that. Which rule is right for your business, where the real exceptions are and which broken records actually cost money differ from company to company, and getting it wrong buries finance in noise. That judgement is where experience pays off, and it is a good topic for a conversation with us.
With a named owner, a record like this is questioned before any number is reported, and routed to the person who can fix it. The wider picture is covered in master data quality.
A Data Governance Framework for CFOs
Frameworks are easy to draw and hard to keep alive. Most governance programs stall because they are run as an IT project, measured by documents produced rather than money recovered, and nobody in the business feels the result. The ones that last are sponsored by finance, owned by named people and judged on margin, cash and audit readiness.
The CFO's role is sponsorship and arbitration. Designing a program that fits your systems, your team and your risk is where most of the effort goes, and it is where we can help. A Data Health Report on your own data, described below, is the simplest place to start.
What Makes Finance Data AI-Ready?
AI-ready data is data an AI model can use without inventing context: each customer is one record, fields follow written rules, and every number can be traced back to its source line. An assistant asked why margin fell in a region will give a confident but wrong answer if half of that region's customers exist twice.
63%
of organizations lack, or are unsure they have, the right data management practices for AI.
59%
of finance leaders use AI in the finance function, up from 37% in 2023.
The principle we hold to is simple: numbers are calculated from your own lines and linked to the invoice lines behind them, and AI explains the results. It never invents a figure.
How korppi Supports Data Governance in Finance
korppi starts with the data before it reports any money. Duplicate customers, broken codes and unowned fields are brought to the surface and routed to an owner first, so leaks are neither double counted nor missed. Every finding then carries its owner, its amount and the invoice lines behind it.
The Data Health Report gives you that picture once, from your own data. korppi Revenue Intelligence keeps it current, comparing every new export with the last one. A read-only export is enough, korppi never writes to your system, and we agree the details with your team. The security brief is shared on request. korppi works with exports from SAP, Oracle, Microsoft Dynamics, Logo, Netsis, Mikro and others, see ERP data quality.
Start With a Data Health Report
The fastest way to see what governance is worth to you is to look at your own data. Request a Data Health Report and we will show you where ownership is missing and what it costs, line by line. If you prefer to see korppi first, request a demo.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between data governance and data management?
Data governance sets the decisions: who owns a field, which rule applies and how exceptions are approved. Data management is the operational work of storing, cleansing and moving data according to those decisions. You need both, but governance comes first, or cleanups do not last.
Who should own data governance in a finance department?
The CFO usually sponsors it, and individual fields are owned by the business leaders who decide their values, such as credit control for payment terms and pricing for price lists. Stewards in master data or billing do the daily corrections. IT supports with access and tooling but should not be the only owner.
What is a data steward in finance?
A data steward is the person responsible for the daily quality of a data domain, such as the customer master. They apply the owner's rules, correct records and escalate conflicts. In smaller teams the owner and steward can be the same person.
How do you start a data governance program without a big project?
Start with the money. Find out which data problems are actually costing revenue today, then give those an owner first. A Data Health Report on your own export shows exactly that, so the program starts with visible results instead of a long framework rollout.
Why does AI need data governance?
AI models reason over the data they are given. Duplicate customers, unowned fields and numbers without a source lead to answers that sound right but are wrong. Governance gives AI unique records, written rules and traceable numbers.
